Although not old, a horse over 10 years is
referred to as "aged." However, horses generally
live much longer. Once a horse is no longer ridden, muscle
tone is reduced and the neck loses strength. Older horses
also lose their natural ability to regulate and maintain body
temperature, so they need adequate protection in bad weather.
Now, more than ever, they need attention and
companionship.
Our retired horses are never abandoned in
a paddock. They are turned out with other horses. Although
they may be retired, they still play an important role on
the farm.
